The Supreme Court has issued notice to the Centre on a challenge to Section 16 of the 2023 law governing the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners. The move supports continuity in India’s discounted crude purchases and creates negotiating space with Washington, but it is reconsiderable and does not remove separate sanctions or trade-policy risks.

137 Cancer Drugs: Trade-Margin Cap, Affordability and Supply Safeguards

The government has ordered trade-margin rationalisation for 137 anti-cancer medicines, including several patented therapies, with revised prices effective from 9 November 2026. The reported formula caps the trade margin at 30% of the maximum retail price excluding GST, rather than a 30% mark-up on the stockist price. The measure targets excessive distribution margins, but high manufacturer prices may continue to limit access to patented medicines.
