APPSC Group 1 and Group 2: Pattern, Andhra-Specific Syllabus and Preparation Plan
APPSC rewards command of Andhra Pradesh's history, geography, economy and post-bifurcation administration. Here is how to build that layer on top of a General Studies base without duplicating work.

The Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission recruits to the state's senior administrative and revenue services, and for aspirants from Andhra Pradesh it offers something the Civil Services Examination cannot: a considerably shorter path to a district-level administrative post, in a familiar state, with an examination whose specific content you are already surrounded by.
As with Telangana, the General Studies foundation overlaps heavily with UPSC. The divergence — and the place where selection is actually decided — is the Andhra Pradesh layer: the region's history and cultural heritage, its geography and river systems, its economy and industrial policy, and the administrative reality created by the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act 2014.
How the two examinations are structured
Group 1 runs as a Preliminary screening test, a descriptive Main examination across several General Studies papers, and an interview. Posts include Deputy Collector, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Commercial Tax Officer, District Registrar and District Panchayat Officer. Group 2 is conducted as a screening test followed by a Main examination, with posts including Municipal Commissioner, Assistant Commercial Tax Officer, Sub-Registrar, Assistant Section Officer and Extension Officer.
The Commission has revised paper structure, marks and negative marking across cycles. Treat the notification for your cycle as the only authoritative source, and check it before you finalise a study plan.
The Andhra Pradesh layer, in detail
- History and culture — the Satavahanas, Ikshvakus, Eastern Chalukyas, Kakatiyas, Vijayanagara and the Qutb Shahi period; temple architecture, Kuchipudi, Kalamkari and the region's literary tradition.
- The freedom movement in Andhra, the Andhra movement and the formation of Andhra State in 1953, and the States Reorganisation Act 1956.
- Geography — the Krishna and Godavari basins, coastal plains and Rayalaseema, cyclone vulnerability, ports, irrigation projects and cropping patterns.
- Economy — agriculture and horticulture, fisheries and aquaculture, the industrial and IT policy framework, MSMEs, and the state's budget and fiscal position.
- Post-bifurcation issues — the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act 2014, the capital question, revenue deficit and special assistance, and asset and institution division.
- Governance and welfare — the state's flagship welfare schemes, e-governance initiatives, district reorganisation and local body structure.
A preparation plan
- Read the current notification and syllabus wording before buying a single book.
- Cover the national General Studies base — polity, modern and ancient history, geography, economy, environment, science and technology — from NCERTs plus one standard source per subject.
- Run the Andhra Pradesh track in parallel from the start, using state government sources: the Socio-Economic Survey of Andhra Pradesh, budget documents and department reports.
- For Group 1, begin descriptive answer writing by month two and sustain it weekly.
- Practise current affairs in two streams — national, and Andhra Pradesh-specific from a regional daily.
- Take full-length tests on the Commission's exact pattern from the midpoint, and analyse each one for topic-level weakness rather than only for score.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between APPSC Group 1 and Group 2?
Group 1 involves a Preliminary test, a descriptive Main examination and an interview, leading to posts such as Deputy Collector, DSP and Commercial Tax Officer. Group 2 involves a screening test and a Main examination, leading to posts such as Municipal Commissioner, ACTO, Sub-Registrar and Assistant Section Officer. Confirm the exact pattern against the notification for your cycle.
How long should I prepare for APPSC Group 1?
About eight months of structured preparation covering the General Studies base, the Andhra Pradesh-specific layer, descriptive answer writing and full-length testing. Group 2 is typically prepared in about four months.
Can I prepare for APPSC and UPSC together?
Yes. The General Studies foundation and national current affairs are shared. The Andhra Pradesh-specific content — regional history, geography, economy and post-bifurcation administration — must be run as a separate track, because UPSC material does not cover it at the depth APPSC expects.
Where can I do APPSC coaching in Hyderabad?
