Subject-wise batches
Optional Subject Coaching — Sociology, Anthropology, Political Science
Dedicated optional coaching in three of the most popular high-scoring UPSC optionals, with syllabus overlap into General Studies.
- Duration
- Subject-wise batches
- Who it is for
- Aspirants choosing or revising an optional subject
- Mode
- Offline at Ashok Nagar Signals, Hyderabad, and live online
Your two optional papers carry 500 of the 1750 Mains marks — more than any single General Studies paper and roughly 28 per cent of the written examination. Despite that weight, the optional is frequently the most casually prepared part of a candidate's syllabus, often outsourced to recorded lectures or a third-party institute.
Pragnya teaches its three optionals in-house as live, dedicated batches: Sociology, Anthropology and Political Science. Each is taught by a subject specialist, each runs its own answer-writing and evaluation track, and each is worked through against fifteen years of past papers so that you know which sections carry weight every year.
All three are deliberately chosen for their combination of manageable syllabus length and General Studies overlap, which means the hours you invest return marks in more than one paper.
What the programme includes

Curriculum
What this programme covers, module by module
Every module is taught with both the Prelims and the Mains requirement in view, so a single pass through a subject serves both papers.
Sociology Optional
Paper I fundamentals — thinkers, stratification, kinship, religion, politics and social change — and Paper II on Indian society, taught with a data layer drawn from Census, NFHS, PLFS and Economic Survey sources. Strong overlap with GS Paper I society, GS Paper II social justice and the Essay. Short syllabus, revisable four or five times before Mains.
Anthropology Optional
Paper I physical and social anthropology — evolution, genetics, theories and institutions — and Paper II on Indian anthropology, tribal communities and constitutional safeguards. Mentored by Dr. Sachin Basavaraj, All India Rank 41. Diagram-driven, factual and the shortest of the three syllabi, which suits science graduates and working aspirants.
Political Science and International Relations
Paper I political theory, Indian and Western thought and Indian politics; Paper II comparative politics, international relations theory and India in world affairs, taught with a standing current affairs update track. The largest GS Paper II and Essay overlap of any optional.
Answer writing track
Each optional runs weekly answer writing with written evaluation from the opening weeks, because an optional script is graded by a subject specialist who expects theoretical anchoring, not General Studies description.
Past-paper mapping
Fifteen years of question papers worked through section by section, so revision time is allocated to the parts of the syllabus that actually recur.
Optional selection counselling
A demo session in each subject before you commit, plus guidance based on your background, reading stamina and available preparation time.
Study rhythm
How the calendar actually runs
- Weekly
- Live subject classes plus one evaluated answer-writing session.
- Sectional
- A test after each syllabus section, mapped against past-year questions.
- Revision
- A fixed multi-cycle revision calendar — the entire reason for choosing a short optional.
- Pre-Mains
- Full-length optional paper simulation under examination conditions.
Outcomes
What you leave the programme with
- A complete optional syllabus finished with time for four or five revisions
- Answers anchored in named thinkers and applied to Indian examples
- Contemporary data and case material integrated rather than bolted on
- Clear knowledge of which syllabus sections repeat every year
- General Studies and Essay marks lifted by the overlap
