Preparation strategy
What Is the Right Age to Start UPSC Preparation?
UPSC allows candidates from 21 up to 32 (General category). The real question is not age but attempts — here is when to start at each stage of life, and how to use your attempts wisely.

When to start, by stage of life
- School (Class 9–12): build reading habits, newspapers and NCERTs; do not begin syllabus grinding. Integrated programmes such as Inter with IAS and Degree with IAS exist for this stage.
- First and second year of degree: start NCERTs and one standard book per subject; write one answer a week; aim to be exam-ready by final year.
- Final year of degree: you can appear in Prelims; treat your first attempt as serious, not exploratory.
- Working professionals: begin 18–24 months before your target attempt, using weekend and online batches; your discipline, not your age, is the constraint.
- Late 20s and 30s: entirely viable, especially with prior work experience that helps in the Interview and in optional choices — but budget attempts consciously.
Attempts, not birthdays, are the real currency
A 21-year-old with six casual attempts loses to a 26-year-old with three serious ones. Every attempt should carry a written plan: full syllabus before Prelims, weekly answer writing from the start, and at least four full-length GS tests before exam day. If you cannot give an attempt that plan this year, it is better to prepare one more year and enter once, properly.
Starting early in Hyderabad
For students who decide early, integrated programmes let preparation grow alongside formal education instead of after it. Pragnya IAS Academy in Ashok Nagar runs integrated Inter with IAS (five years) and Degree with IAS (three years) pathways for exactly this purpose. Ask for a counselling session to see whether the integrated route suits your stage.
Frequently asked questions
Is 30 too late to start UPSC preparation?
No. As long as you are within the age limit, preparation is valid — many candidates clear in their late 20s and 30s. What matters is whether you can commit the focused hours for the full cycle.
Can I start UPSC preparation in Class 11 or 12?
You can build habits — newspapers, NCERTs, general reading — but syllabus-level grinding this early usually burns motivation. Integrated programmes are designed to pace preparation across school and degree years.
How many attempts does the average successful candidate take?
It varies every year, but many selected candidates clear in their second or third serious attempt. Plan each attempt as if it were your best one.
