UPSC Previous Year Question Papers: Where to Find Them and How to Use Them

PYQs are the most reliable syllabus guide UPSC gives you. Use them before, during and after each subject.

Pragnya IAS Academy, Hyderabad · Updated 16 October 2026 · 7 min read

Why PYQs matter

  • They show the depth UPSC expects — conceptual, factual or applied.
  • Themes repeat across years even when exact questions do not.
  • Mains PYQs reveal the directive words (discuss, critically examine, analyse) and the dimensions examiners want.

A topic-wise PYQ method

  1. Collect at least 10 years of Prelims GS-I and Mains GS papers.
  2. Tag each question by subject, topic and micro-topic — the Pragnya Study Library already shows PYQs inside each micro-topic page.
  3. Count questions per topic to find high-yield areas.
  4. Solve topic-wise PYQs right after studying that topic; note why each wrong option is wrong.
  5. For Mains, write outlines for at least 3 PYQs per topic.
  6. In the final two months, take full past papers in exam conditions.

What recent Prelims papers show

Recent Prelims papers favour statement-based questions ('how many of the above are correct'), current events linked to static concepts, and environment, economy and polity. Elimination tricks work less, so conceptual clarity matters more. Practise with the daily Pragnya quiz to keep this question style familiar.
