What Is CSAT and How Do You Pass It?
CSAT is a qualifying paper, but every year strong GS candidates fail Prelims because of it. Here is how to make sure 66 marks is never a worry.

CSAT pattern at a glance
| Paper | Questions | Marks | Time | Role |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GS Paper I | 100 | 200 | 2 hours | Decides the Prelims cut-off |

What CSAT tests
- Reading comprehension — usually the largest share of questions.
- Basic numeracy (Class 10 level): percentages, ratios, averages, time-speed-distance, number systems.
- Data interpretation: tables, charts, sufficiency.
- Logical reasoning and analytical ability: syllogisms, arrangements, coding, directions.
- General mental ability and decision-making.
Why good candidates fail CSAT
Recent papers have been noticeably tougher in maths and reasoning. Candidates from humanities backgrounds who ignore CSAT until the last month, or who attempt every question and lose marks to negative marking, are the most common casualties.
A practical plan to clear CSAT
- Take a previous-year CSAT paper untimed in week one to find your baseline.
- If you score below 90, give CSAT 45–60 minutes a day for three months; above 110, a weekly mock is enough.
- Master comprehension first — it is the most reliable source of marks.
- Revise Class 9–10 maths topics; do not chase advanced shortcuts.
- Write at least 15 full-length timed mocks before Prelims.
- In the exam, aim for 75–85 safe marks — attempt only questions you can solve with confidence.

Frequently asked questions
Are CSAT marks counted for the final merit?
No. CSAT is only qualifying; you must score at least 66 out of 200.
Is there negative marking in CSAT?
Yes. One-third of the marks of a question are deducted for each wrong answer.
Is CSAT hard for arts students?
It needs practice, especially in maths and reasoning, but with three months of steady work most aspirants clear it comfortably.
What happens if I fail CSAT?
Your GS Paper I is not considered and you do not qualify for Mains, regardless of your GS score.
