Pragnya IAS · Chapter 2 of 15 · National parks of India
National parks in India map: east & northeast
Map the Brahmaputra floodplain parks and the Northeast’s hill forests, from Kaziranga’s rhinos to Namdapha’s four big cats.
STUDY NOTE 1
The Brahmaputra floodplain chain
Kaziranga, Manas, Orang, Nameri and Dibru-Saikhowa line the Brahmaputra valley in Assam. Annual floods renew the grasslands that carry the one-horned rhinoceros, wild buffalo and swamp deer.
STUDY NOTE 2
Kaziranga leads
Kaziranga (Assam) holds the world’s largest one-horned rhinoceros population and is a UNESCO natural site and tiger reserve. Manas, also UNESCO, straddles the Bhutan border at the Himalayan foothills.
STUDY NOTE 3
The Northeast hills
Namdapha (Arunachal) is among India’s largest parks and the only one credited with four big-cat species — tiger, leopard, snow leopard and clouded leopard. Keibul Lamjao (Manipur) is the world’s only floating national park, on Loktak’s phumdis, home of the sangai deer.
STUDY NOTE 4
East coast and hills
Sundarbans (West Bengal) is a UNESCO mangrove delta park of swimming tigers. Simlipal (Odisha) and Nokrek and Balphakram (Meghalaya) extend the belt east and south.
Map reading activity
Trace the Brahmaputra and place its five Assam parks in order from Guwahati. Explain in two lines why floods are essential to Kaziranga’s grasslands.

UPSC map practice & Geography Optional connection
For UPSC Prelims environment questions and GS III, pair each protected area or convention site with its state, ecosystem and flagship species. Use a labelled sketch to show distribution; lists and counts change, so note the update date rather than memorising a frozen tally. These are Pragnya-authored exercises, not official UPSC previous-year questions.
