India and its neighbouring countries map study
Learn each neighbour’s relative position, border character and one geographic link to India.
STUDY NOTE 1
Order them around the rim
West to east along the land frontier: Pakistan, Afghanistan (short frontier in the north-west), China, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Myanmar. Sri Lanka and the Maldives lie offshore to the south.
STUDY NOTE 2
Rivers cross borders
The Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra systems all originate or flow beyond India’s borders. Riparian geography makes neighbours central to water questions.
STUDY NOTE 3
Different border geographies
The Himalayan borders are high and remote; the Bangladesh border is a densely settled deltaic plain; the Pakistan border runs through desert and Punjab plains.
Map reading task
Write the seven land neighbours clockwise from the west, then add the two island neighbours with their separating waters.

UPSC map practice & Geography Optional connection
For UPSC Prelims, pair the location with its state, neighbouring relief and relevant geographic process. For GS I and Geography Optional Indian geography revision, use a simple labelled sketch to explain the relationship rather than replacing the answer with place names. These are Pragnya-authored exercises, not official UPSC previous-year questions.
