Annual temperature range: land versus sea map study
Compare seasonal temperature contrasts from equatorial oceans to continental interiors.
STUDY NOTE 1
Define the range correctly
Annual temperature range normally means the warmest monthly mean minus the coldest monthly mean. A January–July difference is a useful approximation in many regions but not necessarily the true annual range everywhere.
STUDY NOTE 2
Continental interiors swing farther
Land responds faster to seasonal heating than the ocean. High-latitude continental interiors such as eastern Siberia combine a long cold winter with warmer summer conditions; coastlines often have smaller ranges.
STUDY NOTE 3
Water moderates nearby air
Ocean heat capacity, mixing and currents smooth seasonal contrasts. Marine influence depends on prevailing winds and barriers, so two places at similar latitude can differ substantially.
STUDY NOTE 4
Separate daily and yearly range
Clear deserts can have large day–night contrasts without matching Siberia’s annual range. Equatorial annual ranges tend to be smaller because seasonal solar-angle changes are limited; rainfall seasons need not match temperature seasons.
Map reading activity
Rank an equatorial island, western European coast and eastern Siberian interior by expected annual range. Explain the distinction between January–July difference and warmest–coldest monthly range.
What does this annual temperature range: land versus sea lesson explain?
Annual temperature range normally means the warmest monthly mean minus the coldest monthly mean. A January–July difference is a useful approximation in many regions but not necessarily the true annual range everywhere.
UPSC map practice & Geography Optional connection
For UPSC GS I and Geography Optional physical geography revision, connect the spatial pattern with the process in the study notes. Draw a small labelled sketch, explain the mechanism and distinguish conceptual models from observed datasets. These are Pragnya-authored exercises, not official UPSC previous-year questions.
