Pragnya IAS · Chapter 13 of 15 · World waters & landscapes
World geography map: continents and oceans
Build a global mental map of continental forms, ocean basins and hemispheres.
STUDY NOTE 1
A connected water system
The Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic and Southern oceans are named parts of an interconnected global ocean. Many modern geographic conventions recognise five oceans; older school maps may use four.
STUDY NOTE 2
Continental conventions
The seven-continent convention separates Europe and Asia, although they form the Eurasian landmass. Other conventions combine them. Explain the convention rather than treating continent count as a unique physical law.
STUDY NOTE 3
Locate with reference lines
Africa straddles the Equator and prime meridian. South America crosses the Equator and Tropic of Capricorn. Antarctica surrounds the South Pole; the Arctic is an ocean with surrounding continental margins.
STUDY NOTE 4
Reality-colour reading
The NASA image distinguishes ocean blue, vegetated land, arid terrain and snow/ice. It is a composite visual reference, not current snow cover, legal country borders or a measured topographic relief model.
Map reading activity
Rotate the globe to locate each continent and ocean. Contrast Antarctica with the Arctic and identify continents crossed by the Equator.
What does this the world: continents & oceans lesson explain?
The Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic and Southern oceans are named parts of an interconnected global ocean. Many modern geographic conventions recognise five oceans; older school maps may use four.
UPSC map practice & Geography Optional connection
For UPSC GS I and Geography Optional physical geography revision, connect the spatial pattern with the process in the study notes. Draw a small labelled sketch, explain the mechanism and distinguish conceptual models from observed datasets. These are Pragnya-authored exercises, not official UPSC previous-year questions.
