World arable land distribution map
Read where the world’s cultivable land lies — and why so little of the Earth can be ploughed.
STUDY NOTE 1
The arable cores
The great blocks of arable land are the northern Indian plains, the North China plain and Manchuria, Europe from France to Ukraine, the US Midwest and Great Plains, the pampas, and the Black Earth belt of Russia–Kazakhstan.
STUDY NOTE 2
Arable is a small share
Only about a tenth of the world’s land is arable; deserts, mountains, ice and forest exclude the rest. Per-person arable land is shrinking as population grows and cities spread onto farmland.
STUDY NOTE 3
Climate and soil decide
Level relief, moderate rainfall and deep soils define cropland potential. The chernozem (black earth) of Ukraine and the alluvium of the Ganga and North China plains are the classic high-quality croplands.
STUDY NOTE 4
Pressure frontiers
New cropland comes mainly from clearing tropical forest — the Amazon and Congo margins — at heavy ecological cost. Land degradation and urbanisation are eating into existing arable land elsewhere.
Map reading activity
Shade the five great arable blocks on the world plate. Rank India, Russia and Australia by total arable land and explain the rank order.
