A 7-step method for every essay
- Spend 5 minutes reading all eight topics; pick the one you can support with the widest range of examples, not the one that sounds most impressive.
- Decode the topic: write down what it literally says, what it implies and what it does not say.
- Brainstorm for 15–20 minutes across dimensions — social, political, economic, ethical, historical, global, technological, environmental, individual.
- Choose a thesis (your central argument) and arrange 8–10 paragraph points that build towards it, with one counter-view section.
- Open with an anecdote, quotation or short story that ties to the thesis — and make the link explicit by the end of the introduction.
- Write each body paragraph as claim → explanation → example (data, case, scheme, historical event, personality).
- Close by returning to the opening image and offering a balanced, forward-looking way out — never a list of schemes.
Handling philosophical (abstract) topics
Section A topics are often quotations such as 'Thinking is like a game; it does not begin unless there is an opposite team.' Do not write a philosophy lecture. Translate the abstract idea into concrete life: a citizen, a scientist, a state, a society. Then move from the individual to institutions to the nation and the world. This 'zoom-out' structure keeps the essay grounded and examinable.
Mistakes that cost the most marks
- Drifting from the topic after the first page — re-read the topic before every new section.
- Turning the essay into a GS answer full of headings and bullet points.
- Only one dimension (for example, only economy) throughout.
- Extreme or one-sided opinions without acknowledging the other view.
- Running out of time on the second essay — fix 90 minutes per essay before the exam.
How to practise
Write one full essay every week for at least 12 weeks before Mains, and get each evaluated with written comments. Between full essays, practise only introductions and outlines on fresh topics — five outlines a week build range quickly. Use the Pragnya Study Library essay section and previous-year topic lists to choose themes.
