UPSC DAF Filling Guide: How to Write Each Entry Without Trapping Yourself

Your DAF is the question paper of your interview. This guide explains how to fill each section — hobbies, preferences, cadre, experience — so the board's questions work for you, not against you.

The golden rule: write only what you can defend for ten minutes

Every word in the DAF is an invitation. “Reading” invites “which book did you read last and what did you disagree with in it?” “Cricket” invites questions on sports governance and the BCCI. “Travelling” invites geography and tourism-policy questions. If you cannot sustain a ten-minute, two-counter-question discussion on an entry, replace it with something you genuinely do.

Hobbies and interests: specific beats impressive

  • Write specific hobbies: “Telugu folk music”, “bird-watching in Himayatnagar”, “solving cryptic crosswords” — not generic “reading” or “music”.
  • Two or three genuine hobbies are stronger than five decorative ones.
  • Prepare each hobby at three levels: basics, current developments, and its policy or social dimension.
  • Never invent a hobby; boards detect rehearsed hobbies within two questions.

Service and cadre preferences

Service preference (IAS, IPS, IFS, IRS and others) and cadre preference are among the most-asked DAF topics. Choose an order you can justify with reasons beyond prestige — the work itself, the domain, your aptitude. For cadre, know your home State's cadre rules and be ready for “why not your home cadre?” or the reverse. There is no universally correct order; there is only an order you can defend calmly.

Education, work experience and gaps

Your graduation subject is fair game even years later: revise its fundamentals and its current applications. For work experience, prepare to explain what you actually did, what you learned, and why you are leaving. For gaps, prepare an honest one-sentence explanation — boards respect candour and punish evasion. If you resigned or were terminated, say so plainly with what you took from the experience.

Home State, district and places you have lived

  • Know your district: geography, economy, one major problem and one scheme working there.
  • Know your State's current political and development issues with balanced views.
  • If you studied or worked in another State, expect comparison questions between the two.
  • For Telangana and Andhra Pradesh aspirants: expect questions on State-specific issues alongside national ones.

The seven DAF mistakes that cost marks

  1. Copying hobbies from toppers' DAFs you found online.
  2. Listing prizes or positions you cannot produce certificates for.
  3. Inconsistency between the Prelims form, Mains DAF and what you say in the interview.
  4. Filling optional-subject or language choices without checking the notification's current rules.
  5. Vague entries like “social service” with no concrete activity behind them.
  6. Ignoring your own name, surname or place name — their meanings and histories are classic openers.
  7. Submitting in a hurry on the last day and living with a typo for the whole interview.

After you submit: turn the DAF into a question bank

Within a week of submission, convert every DAF line into five to ten likely questions and draft 40–60 second answers. This document becomes the spine of your interview preparation and of every mock you take. At Pragnya IAS Academy's interview guidance sessions in Hyderabad, mentors build this question bank with candidates line by line before the first mock.

Frequently asked questions

What is the DAF in UPSC?

The Detailed Application Form is the comprehensive form filled after qualifying Prelims (DAF-I for Mains) and again before the interview (DAF-II). It records your education, work, hobbies, service and cadre preferences, and the interview board questions you largely from it.

How many hobbies should I write in the UPSC DAF?

Two or three genuine, specific hobbies you can discuss for ten minutes each. Quality and depth matter far more than the number of entries.

Can I change my DAF after submission?

No. Once submitted, DAF entries cannot be edited, which is why every entry should be reviewed carefully before the deadline. What you submit is what the board will hold you to.

Does the interview board really read the DAF?

Yes. Board members receive your DAF in advance, and a large share of questions in most Personality Tests trace directly to its entries — hobbies, home district, education, work and preferences.

What if I have a gap year in my DAF?

State it honestly with a one-line explanation — preparation, family responsibility, health. Boards respect candour; evasive or contradictory answers about gaps cost far more marks than the gap itself.

Should my service preference put IAS first?

Only if you can justify it with reasons about the work itself. Boards probe the reasoning, not the order. A thoughtful non-IAS first preference defended well scores better than a conventional order defended poorly.
