Five patterns in high-scoring copies

Patterns in high-scoring Mains answers
PatternWhat it looks like
Directive word'Critically examine' answers include both merits and limitations, not only description
IntroductionOne or two lines: definition, data point or recent event
BodySub-headings or numbered points, each with an example or fact
VisualsSimple flowchart, map of India, or table — drawn in under a minute
ConclusionA way forward linked to constitutional values, a committee or a scheme

What not to copy

  • Fancy handwriting or colours — legibility matters, decoration does not.
  • Memorised introductions that do not fit the question.
  • Over-long answers — toppers finished the paper; you must too.

Turn it into practice

Write three answers a day from the Pragnya Current Affairs mains questions and the Study Library PYQs. Get them evaluated weekly with written feedback; compare your structure with the five patterns above rather than with any one topper.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I see UPSC answer copies?

Candidates can request their own Mains answer copies from UPSC through RTI after the final result; many toppers share theirs publicly.

Do diagrams really add marks?

Diagrams do not earn separate marks, but a relevant flowchart or map conveys more in less time and improves presentation.
