How an integrated degree + IAS programme works

The degree and the UPSC preparation run in parallel. College classes cover your university syllabus and exams; the IAS component follows a separate, year-wise plan so that by the end of the final year the full Prelims and Mains General Studies syllabus has been covered at least once and revised.

Typical 3-year plan for degree + IAS students
YearUPSC focusOutput by year-end
Year 1NCERTs (Class 6–12), Polity, History, Geography basics, newspaper habitStrong foundation; weekly NCERT tests
Year 2Standard books for GS 1–4, Economy, Environment, Science & Tech, CSAT, optional subject introductionFull GS coverage; first answer-writing practice
Year 3Revision, Prelims test series, Mains answer writing, essay, optional depth, current affairs compilationReady to write Prelims in the year after graduation

Who it suits — and who it does not

  • Suits students who have already decided on civil services after Class 12 and want to use their college years productively.
  • Suits students who prefer a disciplined daily timetable over self-study at this age.
  • Less suitable if you are unsure about civil services and want an engineering, medical or other professional degree first — in that case, a weekend or post-graduation programme is better.

Which degree should you choose with IAS coaching?

UPSC accepts any recognised degree, and no stream is officially preferred. In practice, BA (History, Political Science, Public Administration, Sociology) overlaps most with General Studies and popular optional subjects, B.Com helps with Economy, and B.Sc suits students who want Geography, Anthropology or science-based optionals. Choose the stream you enjoy and can score in — your graduation marks still matter for jobs and higher studies as a backup.

Checklist: how to choose a degree + IAS institute in Hyderabad

  1. Ask which university the degree is affiliated to and confirm it is recognised.
  2. Ask for the year-wise UPSC plan in writing — not just a list of subjects.
  3. Check how many hours per week go to UPSC classes versus college classes.
  4. Ask how tests are conducted and how often answers are evaluated with written feedback.
  5. Meet the faculty who will actually teach, and attend a free demo class.
  6. Ask for the total fee for all three years, what it includes (books, test series, hostel) and the refund policy.
  7. Check verified results — names, ranks and years — rather than claims.

Frequently asked questions

Can I write UPSC Prelims during my final year of degree?

Yes. Final-year students can apply for Prelims, but they must produce proof of passing the degree when applying for Mains.

Is degree with IAS coaching better than coaching after graduation?

It gives you a 2–3 year head start and a structured routine, which helps many students. It is not mandatory — many toppers start after graduation. Choose based on how sure you are about civil services.

Which degree is best with IAS coaching?

Any recognised degree is valid. BA in humanities overlaps most with General Studies, but choose the stream you can score well in and enjoy.
