What an Inter + IAS programme covers

Two-year Inter + IAS foundation plan
YearIntermediateUPSC foundation
1st yearBoard syllabus (CEC / HEC / MEC)NCERT Class 6–10, map work, daily newspaper discussion, basic CSAT reasoning
2nd yearBoard syllabus and examsNCERT Class 11–12, introductory Polity and Economy, current-affairs notes, 150-word answer practice

Which Intermediate group is best for civil services?

CEC (Civics, Economics, Commerce) and HEC (History, Economics, Civics) overlap most with UPSC General Studies, so the board syllabus and the IAS foundation reinforce each other. MEC suits students who are strong in mathematics and may take Economics or Statistics-related paths later. Students who want MPC/BiPC for engineering or medicine can still prepare for civil services later — the choice is not permanent.

Benefits and risks of starting at 16

  • Benefit: reading, note-making and writing habits form early and stay.
  • Benefit: NCERT foundation is completed before degree, freeing degree years for standard books and answer writing.
  • Risk: burnout if the timetable leaves no time for board exams, rest or other interests — ask to see the daily schedule.
  • Risk: the student's interest may change; keep board marks strong so every option stays open.

Questions parents should ask before joining

  1. Which board/college is the Intermediate affiliated with, and what were last year's board results?
  2. How many hours a day go to IAS classes, and on which days?
  3. How is progress reported to parents — tests, attendance, mentor meetings?
  4. Is there a clear path into a Degree + IAS programme afterwards?
  5. What is the total two-year fee and what does it include?

Frequently asked questions

Can a student write the IAS exam after Intermediate?

No. UPSC requires a bachelor's degree. Inter + IAS programmes build a foundation; the exam itself is written after graduation (or in the final year for Prelims).

Is CEC or HEC better for IAS?

Both overlap well with UPSC General Studies. HEC suits students who like History; CEC suits those who like Economics and Commerce. Pick the one your child enjoys.

Is it too early to start IAS coaching after 10th?

It is early, and it is not required. It works well for students who are genuinely interested and get a balanced timetable; it is counter-productive if it hurts board exam performance.
