Checklist for choosing your optional

  1. Read both papers' syllabus fully and the last five years' question papers before deciding.
  2. Ask: can I read this subject daily for 18 months without boredom?
  3. Check overlap with GS (for example, Geography, PSIR, Sociology, Public Administration and Anthropology overlap with GS 1–3 or ethics).
  4. Count the syllabus size honestly; science and engineering optionals are long but predictable for graduates of that field.
  5. Check availability of quality books, guidance and answer evaluation in Hyderabad or online.
  6. For Telugu-medium or Telugu-literate candidates, Telugu Literature is a legitimate option with a compact syllabus.
  • Sociology — suits candidates who like reading and connecting concepts to Indian society.
  • Anthropology — compact syllabus; suits science and humanities backgrounds.
  • Geography — strong GS overlap; needs map practice and diagrams.
  • PSIR — strong overlap with GS 2 and essay; more dynamic content.
  • Public Administration — overlaps with governance and ethics.
  • Telugu Literature — suits candidates with deep reading in Telugu.
