Checklist for choosing your optional
- Read both papers' syllabus fully and the last five years' question papers before deciding.
- Ask: can I read this subject daily for 18 months without boredom?
- Check overlap with GS (for example, Geography, PSIR, Sociology, Public Administration and Anthropology overlap with GS 1–3 or ethics).
- Count the syllabus size honestly; science and engineering optionals are long but predictable for graduates of that field.
- Check availability of quality books, guidance and answer evaluation in Hyderabad or online.
- For Telugu-medium or Telugu-literate candidates, Telugu Literature is a legitimate option with a compact syllabus.
Popular optionals and who they suit
- Sociology — suits candidates who like reading and connecting concepts to Indian society.
- Anthropology — compact syllabus; suits science and humanities backgrounds.
- Geography — strong GS overlap; needs map practice and diagrams.
- PSIR — strong overlap with GS 2 and essay; more dynamic content.
- Public Administration — overlaps with governance and ethics.
- Telugu Literature — suits candidates with deep reading in Telugu.
