STUDY NOTE 1

The three zones

Every biosphere reserve has a core (strict protection), a buffer (research and compatible use) and a transition zone (settlements and livelihoods). The zonation, not the boundary, is the idea UPSC tests.

STUDY NOTE 2

Nilgiri was first

Nilgiri (1986), spanning Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka, was India’s first biosphere reserve. Panna (Madhya Pradesh) is among the newest. The network now counts 18 reserves from the cold desert to the islands.

STUDY NOTE 3

The UNESCO layer

Twelve Indian reserves — including Nilgiri, Nanda Devi, Sundarbans, Gulf of Mannar, Pachmarhi and Simlipal — sit in UNESCO’s World Network of Biosphere Reserves under the Man and the Biosphere programme. The national list and the world list are different counts.

STUDY NOTE 4

Spread across every realm

Cold Desert (Himachal), Nanda Devi and Khangchendzonga in the mountains; Nokrek and Dibru-Saikhowa in the northeast; Gulf of Mannar and Great Nicobar in the seas; Achanakmar-Amarkantak and Pachmarhi in the central highlands.

Map reading activity

Draw the three-zone diagram from memory. Mark one biosphere reserve each for the Himalaya, the northeast, the central highlands and the coast.

UPSC map practice & Geography Optional connection

For UPSC Prelims environment questions and GS III, pair each protected area or convention site with its state, ecosystem and flagship species. Use a labelled sketch to show distribution; lists and counts change, so note the update date rather than memorising a frozen tally. These are Pragnya-authored exercises, not official UPSC previous-year questions.
