Pragnya IAS · Chapter 10 of 15 · Protected areas & world recognition
UNESCO natural heritage sites in India map
Separate India’s seven natural World Heritage Sites and its one mixed site from the far longer cultural list — a classic Prelims filter.
STUDY NOTE 1
Seven natural, one mixed
India’s natural World Heritage Sites are Kaziranga, Keoladeo Ghana, Manas, Nanda Devi, Sundarbans, Western Ghats and Great Himalayan National Park. Khangchendzonga National Park is India’s only mixed (natural plus cultural) site.
STUDY NOTE 2
The 1985 batch
Kaziranga, Keoladeo and Manas entered together in 1985 — India’s first natural inscriptions. Nanda Devi (1988, extended 2005 to include Valley of Flowers) and Sundarbans (1987) followed.
STUDY NOTE 3
Serial sites
The Western Ghats (2012) is a serial site of 39 component parts across four states. Great Himalayan (2014) is the newest natural entry. Serial inscription is why component counts appear in options.
STUDY NOTE 4
Do not mix the lists
Taj Mahal, Hampi and the hill railways are cultural sites and never belong in a natural-site answer. The natural list is short enough to memorise exactly — do it.
Map reading activity
Write the seven natural sites in chronological order with their states. Explain what makes Khangchendzonga “mixed”.
What does this unesco natural & mixed heritage sites lesson explain?
India’s natural World Heritage Sites are Kaziranga, Keoladeo Ghana, Manas, Nanda Devi, Sundarbans, Western Ghats and Great Himalayan National Park. Khangchendzonga National Park is India’s only mixed (natural plus cultural) site.
UPSC map practice & Geography Optional connection
For UPSC Prelims environment questions and GS III, pair each protected area or convention site with its state, ecosystem and flagship species. Use a labelled sketch to show distribution; lists and counts change, so note the update date rather than memorising a frozen tally. These are Pragnya-authored exercises, not official UPSC previous-year questions.
