GI tags of India map
Read the geographical-indication map as economic geography — where place itself becomes the brand, from Darjeeling tea to Kanchipuram silk.
STUDY NOTE 1
The law
The Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999 came into force in 2003. Darjeeling tea was the first GI registered in India (2004–05). A GI ties a product’s reputation to its place of origin.
STUDY NOTE 2
Read the clusters
Tea and textiles dominate the map: Darjeeling and Kangra teas in the hills; Mysore and Kanchipuram silks in the south; Chanderi and Maheshwari weaves in the centre; Pashmina in Kashmir; blue pottery in Jaipur.
STUDY NOTE 3
Categories to sort
GIs cover agricultural products, foodstuffs, handicrafts and manufactured goods. Basmati rice, Alphonso mango, Nagpur orange and Malabar pepper show the agricultural face.
STUDY NOTE 4
Why it matters for exams
GI links geography, culture and trade — a ready GS I/GS III bridge. Remember the Act year, the first GI and one example per region rather than chasing the full registry, which keeps growing.
Map reading activity
Place one GI product in each of the five zones of India. Write the Act year and India’s first registered GI from memory.

UPSC map practice & Geography Optional connection
For UPSC Prelims environment questions and GS III, pair each protected area or convention site with its state, ecosystem and flagship species. Use a labelled sketch to show distribution; lists and counts change, so note the update date rather than memorising a frozen tally. These are Pragnya-authored exercises, not official UPSC previous-year questions.
