Mangroves and coral reefs in India map
Read India’s two blue frontiers together — the mangrove deltas that blunt cyclones and the four coral regions that shelter reefs.
STUDY NOTE 1
Mangrove strongholds
The Sundarbans is the world’s largest mangrove forest. Bhitarkanika (Odisha), Pichavaram (Tamil Nadu) and the Godavari–Krishna deltas carry the east-coast belt; Gujarat’s Gulf of Kutch holds the main west-coast stands.
STUDY NOTE 2
Four coral regions
India’s reefs cluster in the Gulf of Kutch, the Gulf of Mannar, Lakshadweep and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Gulf of Mannar adds seagrass and dugong; Lakshadweep is atoll country.
STUDY NOTE 3
Reef types
Fringing reefs hug coasts, barrier reefs stand offshore behind lagoons, and atolls ring a lagoon without a central island. Lakshadweep’s atolls and the Andaman fringing reefs are the textbook Indian examples.
STUDY NOTE 4
The protection argument
Mangroves and reefs dissipate wave energy, nurseries for fisheries and store blue carbon. Cyclone-loss studies after Odisha’s storms are the standard Mains evidence for mangrove buffers.
Map reading activity
Mark the three east-coast mangrove sites and the four coral regions. Sketch fringing, barrier and atoll reef cross-sections.

UPSC map practice & Geography Optional connection
For UPSC Prelims environment questions and GS III, pair each protected area or convention site with its state, ecosystem and flagship species. Use a labelled sketch to show distribution; lists and counts change, so note the update date rather than memorising a frozen tally. These are Pragnya-authored exercises, not official UPSC previous-year questions.
