India: distribution of population, 2011 map study
See where India’s 1.21 billion people actually live and why the map is lumpy.
STUDY NOTE 1
The settled core
The Ganga plain, the coastal strips and the industrial corridors carry the bulk of population; UP, Maharashtra and Bihar are the three most populous states.
STUDY NOTE 2
The empty thirds
The Thar, the Himalayan states, the northeast hills and the central Indian forests remain thinly peopled — physical difficulty shapes the map.
STUDY NOTE 3
Distribution versus density
Distribution asks where people are; density asks how crowded each unit is. A big sparse state can hold fewer people than a small dense one.
Map reading task
Rank the five most populous states from memory and give one geographic reason for each.

UPSC map practice & Geography Optional connection
For UPSC Prelims, pair the location with its state, neighbouring relief and relevant geographic process. For GS I and Geography Optional Indian geography revision, use a simple labelled sketch to explain the relationship rather than replacing the answer with place names. These are Pragnya-authored exercises, not official UPSC previous-year questions.
