India: distribution of rice map study
Explain the rice map through heat, water and labour rather than memorising state lists.
STUDY NOTE 1
What rice demands
Rice needs high temperature, abundant water (rainfall above ~100 cm or irrigation) and level land for ponding. It is a labour-intensive kharif staple.
STUDY NOTE 2
The core zone
West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha, Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Tamil Nadu lead production — a mix of humid east and irrigated northwest.
STUDY NOTE 3
Irrigation shifted the map
Punjab and Haryana became rice bowls through canal and tubewell irrigation despite modest rainfall — with groundwater depletion as the cost.
Map reading task
Shade the five leading rice states and mark which rely on rainfall versus irrigation.

UPSC map practice & Geography Optional connection
For UPSC Prelims, pair the location with its state, neighbouring relief and relevant geographic process. For GS I and Geography Optional Indian geography revision, use a simple labelled sketch to explain the relationship rather than replacing the answer with place names. These are Pragnya-authored exercises, not official UPSC previous-year questions.
