India: distribution of wheat (detailed) map study
The finer wheat map: why the crop stops at the Narmada and concentrates in the northwest.
STUDY NOTE 1
The thermal limit
Wheat needs cool winters; yields fall sharply in the warm south. The crop’s southern boundary roughly follows the Narmada–Chotanagpur line.
STUDY NOTE 2
The surplus belt
Punjab, Haryana and western UP produce the marketable surplus that fills central procurement — the FCI’s map is essentially this wheat map.
STUDY NOTE 3
MP’s rise
Madhya Pradesh expanded wheat through irrigation and new varieties, becoming a major producer — crop maps change with technology and policy.
Map reading task
Draw wheat’s approximate southern limit and name the three surplus states feeding procurement.

UPSC map practice & Geography Optional connection
For UPSC Prelims, pair the location with its state, neighbouring relief and relevant geographic process. For GS I and Geography Optional Indian geography revision, use a simple labelled sketch to explain the relationship rather than replacing the answer with place names. These are Pragnya-authored exercises, not official UPSC previous-year questions.
