India: iron & steel plants map study
Steel-plant geography is the classic exercise in weighing ore, coal, water and transport.
STUDY NOTE 1
The Chotanagpur cluster
Jamshedpur, Bokaro, Durgapur and Burnpur grew around Jharkhand–Bengal ore and Damodar coking coal — raw-material-oriented locations.
STUDY NOTE 2
The later spread
Bhilai (Chhattisgarh), Rourkela (Odisha), Visakhapatnam (coastal, port-based) and Salem (Tamil Nadu) show the industry moving to new ore fields and the coast.
STUDY NOTE 3
Coastal shift
Modern plants like Visakhapatnam use imported coking coal via ports — the location logic flipped from coal fields to coasts.
Map reading task
Rank the four classic plants by their distance from coal, then explain why Visakhapatnam broke the pattern.

UPSC map practice & Geography Optional connection
For UPSC Prelims, pair the location with its state, neighbouring relief and relevant geographic process. For GS I and Geography Optional Indian geography revision, use a simple labelled sketch to explain the relationship rather than replacing the answer with place names. These are Pragnya-authored exercises, not official UPSC previous-year questions.
