India: nuclear & thermal power plants map study
Read power-plant locations as decisions about fuel, cooling water and distance to demand.
STUDY NOTE 1
Nuclear siting logic
Tarapur (Maharashtra), Rawatbhata (Rajasthan), Kalpakkam (Tamil Nadu), Narora (UP), Kakrapar (Gujarat), Kaiga (Karnataka) and Kudankulam (Tamil Nadu) sit near coasts or large water bodies for cooling, away from dense cities.
STUDY NOTE 2
Thermal follows coal
Large pithead thermal stations cluster near coalfields — Singrauli, Korba, Talcher — because moving electricity is cheaper than moving coal.
STUDY NOTE 3
The map shows a trade-off
Coastal nuclear plants use seawater cooling; pithead thermal plants minimise fuel transport. Both logics appear repeatedly in UPSC location questions.
Map reading task
Place seven nuclear stations on the map and explain the siting of any two in one sentence each.

UPSC map practice & Geography Optional connection
For UPSC Prelims, pair the location with its state, neighbouring relief and relevant geographic process. For GS I and Geography Optional Indian geography revision, use a simple labelled sketch to explain the relationship rather than replacing the answer with place names. These are Pragnya-authored exercises, not official UPSC previous-year questions.
