India: railways map study
Read the rail map as a density gradient from the northern plains to the peninsular interior.
STUDY NOTE 1
Densest in the plains
The Ganga plain has the thickest network — flat terrain, dense population and agriculture demand it. The northeast, Himalaya and Thar remain thin.
STUDY NOTE 2
Zones and headquarters
Indian Railways is divided into zones; know the big ones — Northern (Delhi), Eastern (Kolkata), Central (Mumbai), Southern (Chennai), East Coast (Bhubaneswar), Northeast Frontier (Guwahati).
STUDY NOTE 3
Gauge unification
Project Unigauge converted most metre gauge to broad gauge; a few heritage hill lines (Darjeeling, Nilgiri, Kalka-Shimla) survive as narrow gauge UNESCO sites.
Map reading task
Shade the densest rail region and name the zonal headquarters of the four oldest zones.

UPSC map practice & Geography Optional connection
For UPSC Prelims, pair the location with its state, neighbouring relief and relevant geographic process. For GS I and Geography Optional Indian geography revision, use a simple labelled sketch to explain the relationship rather than replacing the answer with place names. These are Pragnya-authored exercises, not official UPSC previous-year questions.
