Map scale: Delhi at four scales
Learn what changes when the same city is drawn at 1:1 million, 1:250k, 1:50k and 1:25k.
STUDY NOTE 1
Scale is a ratio
1:50,000 means 1 cm on the map equals 50,000 cm (500 m) on the ground. Larger scale = bigger ratio denominator smaller = more detail, less area.
STUDY NOTE 2
Detail trades with coverage
At small scales Delhi is a dot; at 1:25k individual streets, contours and buildings appear. Choose scale by purpose: regional context versus field navigation.
STUDY NOTE 3
Three ways to state scale
Statement (1 cm = 5 km), representative fraction (1:500,000) and graphic/linear scale bars all express the same relation; the bar survives photocopy enlargement.
Map reading task
Convert: how many km on the ground is 8 cm at 1:250,000? Then say which scale suits a trekking map.

UPSC map practice & Geography Optional connection
For UPSC Prelims, pair the location with its state, neighbouring relief and relevant geographic process. For GS I and Geography Optional Indian geography revision, use a simple labelled sketch to explain the relationship rather than replacing the answer with place names. These are Pragnya-authored exercises, not official UPSC previous-year questions.
