Nagpur district: rocks & minerals map study
Read a geological overlay: how rock types and mineral occurrences are symbolised on district maps.
STUDY NOTE 1
Geology on the map
Geological maps use colours and letter symbols for formations; the Nagpur region carries Deccan Trap basalts with older crystalline inliers and manganese-bearing Sausar rocks.
STUDY NOTE 2
Manganese country
The Nagpur–Chhindwara belt is a historic manganese producer; map symbols mark mines, quarries and mineral occurrences.
STUDY NOTE 3
Rock controls land
Basalt gives black cotton soil and flat-topped hills; crystalline rocks give rugged relief. The geological map predicts the soil and relief maps.
Map reading task
Match five geological symbols to their meanings and predict soil type over two mapped formations.

UPSC map practice & Geography Optional connection
For UPSC Prelims, pair the location with its state, neighbouring relief and relevant geographic process. For GS I and Geography Optional Indian geography revision, use a simple labelled sketch to explain the relationship rather than replacing the answer with place names. These are Pragnya-authored exercises, not official UPSC previous-year questions.
