Pragnya IAS · Chapter 6 of 19 · World farming systems
Areas of extensive commercial grain farming map study
Map the temperate grassland breadbaskets — prairies, steppes, pampas and downs — where machines grow wheat for the world.
STUDY NOTE 1
The breadbasket belt
Extensive commercial grain farming occupies the North American prairies, the Eurasian steppes of Ukraine–Russia–Kazakhstan, the Argentine pampas, the Australian wheat belt and parts of the South African veld.
STUDY NOTE 2
Wheat is the signature crop
Spring wheat in Canada and the steppes, winter wheat in the US plains and Ukraine; maize and barley join in places. Semi-arid temperate grasslands with flat land suit grain and machines.
STUDY NOTE 3
Extensive means thinly peopled
Farms are huge, population sparse, and labour replaced by machinery — the opposite of monsoon Asia. Output per worker is very high; yield per hectare is moderate and rainfall-dependent.
STUDY NOTE 4
Market and risk
Production is entirely for sale, so world prices, drought and frost decide fortunes. The Canadian prairies’ short growing season and the steppes’ variable rainfall are classic hazard examples.
Map reading activity
Locate the prairies, the Ukraine steppe, the pampas and the Australian wheat belt. Contrast farm size and labour with intensive subsistence Asia in two lines.
