Pragnya IAS · Chapter 5 of 19 · World farming systems
Areas of intensive subsistence farming map study
Read the crowded rice lands of monsoon Asia, where tiny farms feed the world’s densest rural populations.
STUDY NOTE 1
Monsoon Asia is the core
Intensive subsistence farming dominates the plains and deltas of India, Bangladesh, China south of the Qinling line, Southeast Asia and the islands of Indonesia and the Philippines.
STUDY NOTE 2
Rice dominates
Where water is abundant, wet paddy is the staple; in drier or cooler parts, wheat, millets and pulses take over. Double and triple cropping follow the monsoon and irrigation.
STUDY NOTE 3
Small farms, heavy labour
Land pressure splits holdings into fragments. Yield per hectare is high through manual labour and careful water management, but output per worker stays low — the defining paradox of the system.
STUDY NOTE 4
Contrast with Japan
Japan and parts of Korea practise an intensive but mechanised, market-linked variant. Terrace farming on hill slopes, as in Java and the Philippines’ Ifugao terraces, adapts the system to relief.
Map reading activity
Shade the Ganga plain, the Yangtze delta, Java and the Mekong delta. Explain why farm size shrinks as rural population grows.
