Pragnya IAS · Chapter 11 of 19 · Transcontinental railways
The Australian Trans-Continental Railway map study
Ride the Indian Pacific route from Sydney to Perth across the Nullarbor — the line with the world’s longest straight stretch.
STUDY NOTE 1
Sydney to Perth
The transcontinental route links Sydney through Parkes, Broken Hill, Peterborough, Port Pirie and Port Augusta, then crosses the Nullarbor via Forrest and Kalgoorlie to Perth. Melbourne and Albury connect on the southeastern network.
STUDY NOTE 2
The Nullarbor straight
Between Ooldea and Kalgoorlie the line includes about 478 km of dead-straight track across the Nullarbor Plain — the longest straight railway section in the world.
STUDY NOTE 3
Gauge and history
Australia’s states built railways in different gauges, so through running needed standardisation; the Sydney–Perth standard-gauge link was completed in 1970. The Indian Pacific passenger service now covers it in about 65 hours.
STUDY NOTE 4
Exam traps
Perth faces the Indian Ocean, Sydney the Pacific — ocean-swap options are the classic error. The line serves mining (Broken Hill, Kalgoorlie gold) as much as passengers.
Map reading activity
Mark Sydney, Broken Hill, Port Augusta, Kalgoorlie and Perth. Explain why a straight 478 km section was possible across the Nullarbor.
