Pragnya IAS · Chapter 10 of 19 · Transcontinental railways
The Trans-Canadian Railway map study
Cross Canada by rail from Vancouver on the Pacific to Halifax on the Atlantic, through the prairie and Shield cities.
STUDY NOTE 1
Ocean to ocean
The Canadian transcontinental line links Vancouver (with Victoria) through Kamloops, Calgary, Regina, Winnipeg and Sudbury to Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec and on to Halifax and Sydney (Nova Scotia) — about 7,000 km.
STUDY NOTE 2
A nation-building line
The Canadian Pacific Railway, completed in 1885, united British Columbia with eastern Canada and opened the prairies to wheat settlement. The wheat economy of the prairies grew along its sidings.
STUDY NOTE 3
Terrain on the route
The line crosses the Coastal and Rocky Mountains, the prairie wheatlands, the rugged Canadian Shield around Sudbury, and the St Lawrence lowland cities — a cross-section of all of Canada’s major landforms.
STUDY NOTE 4
Exam traps
Do not confuse endpoint pairs: Vancouver–Halifax is Canadian; Moscow–Vladivostok is Russian. The map’s “Cudbury” is Sudbury — read the label, not atlas memory.
Map reading activity
Order the cities from Vancouver to Halifax. Identify the landform region the railway crosses between Calgary and Winnipeg, and between Winnipeg and Sudbury.
