Pragnya IAS · Chapter 15 of 19 · Sea routes, canals & waterways
The Rhine waterway map study
Follow the world’s busiest inland waterway from Basel through the Ruhr to Rotterdam and the North Sea.
STUDY NOTE 1
Navigable from Basel
The Rhine is navigable for barges from Basel in Switzerland to its North Sea mouth — about 700 km of working waterway. The Alpine headwaters above Basel are not barge waters; navigation starts at Basel, not the source.
STUDY NOTE 2
A river of many countries
The Rhine flows through or borders Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria (via Lake Constance), France, Germany, Luxembourg (via the Moselle confluence) and the Netherlands. International commissions have managed it since the nineteenth century.
STUDY NOTE 3
Industry on the banks
The Ruhr coalfield, the chemical belt around Ludwigshafen and Leverkusen, and the port of Duisburg — the world’s largest inland port — grew on Rhine coal, ore and bulk freight. Rotterdam at the mouth is Europe’s largest seaport.
STUDY NOTE 4
Why it leads
A gentle gradient, canalised channel, dense industrial hinterland and connection to the North Sea make the Rhine carry more freight than any other river waterway. The Danube–Main canal links it eastward to the Black Sea system.
Map reading activity
Mark Basel, Strasbourg, the Ruhr, Duisburg and Rotterdam. Explain why the Rhine carries more freight than the longer Danube.
