STUDY NOTE 1

What it connects

Opened in 1869, the Suez Canal runs about 193 km from Port Said on the Mediterranean to Suez on the Red Sea’s Gulf of Suez. It is a sea-level canal with no locks.

STUDY NOTE 2

The distance it saves

The canal cuts the London–Mumbai voyage by roughly 40 per cent compared with the Cape of Good Hope route, and the Mediterranean–Singapore run by a similar order. Time and fuel savings made it the artery of Europe–Asia trade.

STUDY NOTE 3

Lakes on the line

The channel passes through Lake Manzala, Lake Timsah and the Great and Little Bitter Lakes, which serve as passing bays. The 2021 Ever Given grounding showed how a single blockage halts a large share of world trade.

STUDY NOTE 4

Geopolitics

Egypt nationalised the canal in 1956, triggering the Suez Crisis. Tolls are a pillar of the Egyptian economy, and the canal was widened with a parallel channel in 2015.

Map reading activity

Mark Port Said, the Bitter Lakes and Suez. Calculate roughly how many kilometres the canal saves a London–Mumbai ship versus the Cape route.
