Movement of the Indian plate map study
Follow India’s 200-million-year journey from Gondwana to its collision with Asia.
STUDY NOTE 1
The Gondwana break-up
India split from the Madagascar-Antarctica block in the Mesozoic, drifted north over the Réunion hotspot (Deccan Traps, ~66 million years ago) and raced towards Asia.
STUDY NOTE 2
Collision and uplift
The India-Eurasia collision beginning around 50–55 million years ago crumpled sediments into the Himalaya; India still pushes north at roughly 4–5 cm per year.
STUDY NOTE 3
Consequences today
Ongoing convergence drives Himalayan earthquakes, river antecedence and the rise that feeds the monsoon’s orographic engine.
Map reading task
Draw a four-panel cartoon: Gondwana, break-up, Deccan eruption, collision — with approximate dates.

What does this movement of the indian plate lesson explain?
India split from the Madagascar-Antarctica block in the Mesozoic, drifted north over the Réunion hotspot (Deccan Traps, ~66 million years ago) and raced towards Asia.
UPSC map practice & Geography Optional connection
For UPSC Prelims, pair the location with its state, neighbouring relief and relevant geographic process. For GS I and Geography Optional Indian geography revision, use a simple labelled sketch to explain the relationship rather than replacing the answer with place names. These are Pragnya-authored exercises, not official UPSC previous-year questions.
