Lakes, lagoons & wetland landscapes map study
Use waterbody location and coastal setting to distinguish freshwater lakes from brackish lagoons.
STUDY NOTE 1
Coastal exchange
Chilika in Odisha is a brackish lagoon connected to the Bay of Bengal. Salinity depends on freshwater inflow, marine exchange and season; it is not constant everywhere.
STUDY NOTE 2
Floating habitat
Loktak in Manipur is associated with phumdis. Keibul Lamjao National Park supports the sangai deer in this wetland landscape.
STUDY NOTE 3
Water connections matter
Catchment land use changes sediment, nutrients and inflow. A Ramsar designation signals wetland importance but does not mean every wetland is a national park.
Map reading task
Locate Chilika and Loktak. Write one geographic difference, one habitat difference and one management challenge for each.

UPSC map practice & Geography Optional connection
For UPSC Prelims, pair the location with its state, neighbouring relief and relevant geographic process. For GS I and Geography Optional Indian geography revision, use a simple labelled sketch to explain the relationship rather than replacing the answer with place names. These are Pragnya-authored exercises, not official UPSC previous-year questions.
