Annual rainfall of India map study
Read the rainfall map as the outcome of winds, relief and distance from the sea.
STUDY NOTE 1
The wet extremes
Mawsynram and Cherrapunji in Meghalaya record among the world’s highest rainfalls, aided by funnelled Bay winds against the Khasi hills. The windward Western Ghats also exceed 250 cm.
STUDY NOTE 2
The dry extremes
Western Rajasthan receives under 25 cm in places. The Thar’s aridity reflects distance from moisture sources and the Aravalli’s orientation parallel to the winds.
STUDY NOTE 3
Isohyets tell the story
Lines of equal rainfall run roughly parallel to the west coast, showing the steep decline from windward ghats to the leeward Deccan.
Map reading task
Draw the 200 cm, 100 cm and 50 cm isohyets from memory and shade the two wettest and two driest zones.

UPSC map practice & Geography Optional connection
For UPSC Prelims, pair the location with its state, neighbouring relief and relevant geographic process. For GS I and Geography Optional Indian geography revision, use a simple labelled sketch to explain the relationship rather than replacing the answer with place names. These are Pragnya-authored exercises, not official UPSC previous-year questions.
