Monsoon: winds, relief & rainfall contrasts map study
Explain rainfall patterns through seasonal circulation and relief rather than memorising coloured bands alone.
STUDY NOTE 1
Seasonal circulation
Southwest monsoon winds bring much of India’s summer rain. Onset and withdrawal vary between years; a climatological date is not a forecast for the current year.
STUDY NOTE 2
Windward versus leeward
Moist air rises over the Western Ghats, favouring rain on the windward side. Parts of the interior Deccan lie in a rain shadow; local rainfall also depends on circulation and storms.
STUDY NOTE 3
A different rainy season
Tamil Nadu receives an important part of its rain during the northeast monsoon season. The climate overlay uses Köppen–Geiger normals for 1991–2020, not seasonal rainfall totals or live weather.
Map reading task
Compare a Western Ghats windward location, an interior Deccan location and coastal Tamil Nadu. Explain why their rain calendars differ.

UPSC map practice & Geography Optional connection
For UPSC Prelims, pair the location with its state, neighbouring relief and relevant geographic process. For GS I and Geography Optional Indian geography revision, use a simple labelled sketch to explain the relationship rather than replacing the answer with place names. These are Pragnya-authored exercises, not official UPSC previous-year questions.
