STUDY NOTE 1

Event footprints need context

The mapped India Flood Inventory records historical events. Some footprints reflect reported administrative extents, not observed floodwater in every part of the polygon.

STUDY NOTE 2

Hazard is not the same as risk

Risk depends on hazard, exposure and vulnerability. Settlement density, drainage, infrastructure and preparedness can change impacts even within the same river basin.

STUDY NOTE 3

A live decision needs live information

Historical maps help study recurring exposure and management. They must not be used for evacuation, present-day flood depth or cyclone forecasts; official current warnings control those decisions.

Map reading task

Overlay a historical flood footprint with a river basin. Identify what the map proves and two things it cannot establish about current flood risk.

UPSC map practice & Geography Optional connection

For UPSC Prelims, pair the location with its state, neighbouring relief and relevant geographic process. For GS I and Geography Optional Indian geography revision, use a simple labelled sketch to explain the relationship rather than replacing the answer with place names. These are Pragnya-authored exercises, not official UPSC previous-year questions.
