Ports, coasts & maritime connections map study
Build coast-to-port associations and understand how hinterlands connect to maritime trade.
STUDY NOTE 1
Identify the coast first
Mumbai and Cochin lie on the Arabian Sea side. Visakhapatnam lies on the Bay of Bengal coast. Port names and adjacent urban names can conceal distinct port authorities and facilities.
STUDY NOTE 2
A port has a hinterland
Railways, roads, inland waterways and industrial clusters connect production areas to ports. Harbour form, navigation depth and cargo facilities influence use.
STUDY NOTE 3
Location versus network
Point locations are accurate enough for educational association, not navigation. Sea routes and ship positions require dedicated verified datasets; straight lines between ports are not actual shipping lanes.
Map reading task
Order Mumbai, Cochin and Visakhapatnam by latitude; identify each coast and suggest one hinterland connection.

UPSC map practice & Geography Optional connection
For UPSC Prelims, pair the location with its state, neighbouring relief and relevant geographic process. For GS I and Geography Optional Indian geography revision, use a simple labelled sketch to explain the relationship rather than replacing the answer with place names. These are Pragnya-authored exercises, not official UPSC previous-year questions.
