India: earthquake hazard zones map study
Learn the four-zone seismic map and why the Himalayan rim and the northeast sit at the top.
STUDY NOTE 1
Zone V first
The entire northeast, Kashmir, Kutch and the Andaman-Nicobar arc lie in Zone V (highest risk) — all plate-boundary or faulted regions.
STUDY NOTE 2
The zonation logic
Zones V, IV, III and II (Zone I was merged) reflect expected shaking intensity from past earthquakes and tectonic setting; the peninsular shield is largely Zone II–III.
STUDY NOTE 3
Intraplate surprises
Latur (1993) and Koyna showed the “stable” peninsula can still produce damaging quakes — reservoir-triggered and intraplate events break the simple map.
Map reading task
Shade Zone V regions and write one historical earthquake for each of three zones.

UPSC map practice & Geography Optional connection
For UPSC Prelims, pair the location with its state, neighbouring relief and relevant geographic process. For GS I and Geography Optional Indian geography revision, use a simple labelled sketch to explain the relationship rather than replacing the answer with place names. These are Pragnya-authored exercises, not official UPSC previous-year questions.
