India: natural vegetation map study
A second, finer vegetation map — learn to read species-level associations within the five great forest types.
STUDY NOTE 1
Evergreen detail
Rosewood, ebony and mahogany mark the Western Ghats evergreen belt; the Andaman forests add cane and bamboo in profusion.
STUDY NOTE 2
Deciduous detail
Sal dominates the moist deciduous forests of the northeast and Chotanagpur; teak rules the drier deciduous tracts of the Deccan. Both shed leaves in the dry season.
STUDY NOTE 3
Montane zonation
Himalayan vegetation steps from terai sal through oak-rhododendron to conifer (deodar, pine, fir) and finally alpine meadows — altitude replaces latitude.
Map reading task
Make a three-row table: forest type, signature species, one state — and fill five rows from memory.

UPSC map practice & Geography Optional connection
For UPSC Prelims, pair the location with its state, neighbouring relief and relevant geographic process. For GS I and Geography Optional Indian geography revision, use a simple labelled sketch to explain the relationship rather than replacing the answer with place names. These are Pragnya-authored exercises, not official UPSC previous-year questions.
