Physical map of India: landforms
Master the physical base map — mountains, plateaus, plains, coasts and islands — on which every other theme is drawn.
STUDY NOTE 1
The northern wall
Karakoram, Ladakh, Zaskar, Pir Panjal, Dhaula Dhar and the main Himalayan ranges form successive north–south belts; the Trans-Himalaya lies beyond the main arc.
STUDY NOTE 2
The peninsular block
Aravalli, Vindhya, Satpura, Western and Eastern Ghats frame the Deccan; the block tilts east and is edged by narrow coastal plains.
STUDY NOTE 3
The plains and islands
The Indus-Ganga-Brahmaputra plains lie between mountains and plateau; the Andaman-Nicobar (volcanic/tectonic arc) and Lakshadweep (coral) islands differ fundamentally in origin.
Map reading task
Draw India’s outline and place eight named ranges plus the two island groups with their origins.

UPSC map practice & Geography Optional connection
For UPSC Prelims, pair the location with its state, neighbouring relief and relevant geographic process. For GS I and Geography Optional Indian geography revision, use a simple labelled sketch to explain the relationship rather than replacing the answer with place names. These are Pragnya-authored exercises, not official UPSC previous-year questions.
