STUDY NOTE 1

Regional divisions west to east

Punjab/Kashmir Himalaya, Kumaon Himalaya, Nepal Himalaya and Assam Himalaya are the classic regional divisions, separated roughly by the Indus, Satluj, Kali and Tista rivers.

STUDY NOTE 2

Longitudinal belts

South to north: Shiwalik (outer), Lesser Himalaya, Greater Himalaya and Trans-Himalaya. Each belt has distinct rock, relief and settlement character.

STUDY NOTE 3

Bends at both ends

The arc makes sharp syntaxial bends near Nanga Parbat in the west and Namcha Barwa in the east, where the Indus and Brahmaputra cut deep gorges.

Map reading task

Draw the arc and mark the four river-based regional boundaries; then label the four longitudinal belts in a cross-section.

UPSC map practice & Geography Optional connection

For UPSC Prelims, pair the location with its state, neighbouring relief and relevant geographic process. For GS I and Geography Optional Indian geography revision, use a simple labelled sketch to explain the relationship rather than replacing the answer with place names. These are Pragnya-authored exercises, not official UPSC previous-year questions.
