Major rivers and lakes of India map study
Survey India’s full river roster — Himalayan and peninsular — with its major lakes in one mental map.
STUDY NOTE 1
Two river families
Himalayan rivers are perennial, fed by snowmelt and monsoon rain. Peninsular rivers are largely seasonal and rain-fed, with shorter courses and older valleys.
STUDY NOTE 2
West-flowing exceptions
Narmada and Tapi flow west through rift valleys into the Arabian Sea; Luni ends in the Rann of Kutch without reaching the sea.
STUDY NOTE 3
Lakes of many origins
Wular (tectonic), Dal (glacial/fluvial), Chilika (lagoon), Loktak (wetland with phumdis), Sambhar (saline) and Vembanad (backwater lagoon) show India’s lake diversity.
Map reading task
List six Himalayan and six peninsular rivers from memory, then place one lake of each origin type on the map.

UPSC map practice & Geography Optional connection
For UPSC Prelims, pair the location with its state, neighbouring relief and relevant geographic process. For GS I and Geography Optional Indian geography revision, use a simple labelled sketch to explain the relationship rather than replacing the answer with place names. These are Pragnya-authored exercises, not official UPSC previous-year questions.
