Relief map of India: terrain and drainage
See India’s relief as five macro-regions and read altitude as the master control on climate, rivers and settlement.
STUDY NOTE 1
Five macro-regions
The northern mountains, the northern plains, the peninsular plateau, the coastal plains and the islands form India’s first-order relief division.
STUDY NOTE 2
The plateau tilts east
The peninsular block slopes broadly eastward, which is why most large peninsular rivers flow to the Bay of Bengal.
STUDY NOTE 3
Plains are built, not given
The northern plains are alluvial, constructed by the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra systems. Their flatness supports intensive agriculture and dense settlement.
Map reading task
Colour the five macro relief regions on an outline map and write one economic consequence of each.

UPSC map practice & Geography Optional connection
For UPSC Prelims, pair the location with its state, neighbouring relief and relevant geographic process. For GS I and Geography Optional Indian geography revision, use a simple labelled sketch to explain the relationship rather than replacing the answer with place names. These are Pragnya-authored exercises, not official UPSC previous-year questions.
