Agriculture: cropland, climate & water map study
Learn why crop suitability differs from mapped land cover and current production statistics.
STUDY NOTE 1
Land cover is not crop identity
ESA WorldCover class 40 maps cropland, not separate rice or wheat fields. The atlas uses coarse 2021 cells; small fields can disappear during majority resampling.
STUDY NOTE 2
Water and growing season
Rice is associated with warm conditions and substantial water availability; irrigation permits cultivation beyond naturally wet regions. Wheat commonly occupies the cooler rabi season in northern India.
STUDY NOTE 3
Do not infer yield from area
Production depends on cultivated area, yield, irrigation, inputs and weather. A cropland polygon supplies none of these current-season quantities by itself.
Map reading task
Compare cropland against the climate and basin layers. Propose two reasons for cultivation in a relatively dry region without claiming a crop species from the polygon.

UPSC map practice & Geography Optional connection
For UPSC Prelims, pair the location with its state, neighbouring relief and relevant geographic process. For GS I and Geography Optional Indian geography revision, use a simple labelled sketch to explain the relationship rather than replacing the answer with place names. These are Pragnya-authored exercises, not official UPSC previous-year questions.
